Dads, where art thou?

I received this email and thought it was pretty interesting to share…it is from a dad:)

As a father and a filmmaker, I want to share why it’s as important to get fathers involved in this movement as it for moms.
Most dads aren’t aware of what’s really going on in our culture. They think the issues promoted on MomsRising.org have nothing to do with them - that these are just women’s issues.  At the beginning of this past year I started work on a documentary film project about the changing role of fatherhood, titled The Evolution of Dad.  (http://www.evolutionofdad.com/)
Before embarking on the project, I figured that, being a fairly involved dad of two young sons, I must know something about fatherhood. However, looking back, it’s amazing how little I really did understand, especially regarding all the different cultural assumptions and messages we’re given about what defines a good father. The bottom line is that while our society might say that fatherhood is important, the real underlying message is that dads are better off spending more time at work and less at home.
From my perspective, the only way we’re going to create any serious change is by getting dads more aware and more involved in the process. That’s why I’m making my film and that’s why I’m doing all I can to support Moms and FamiliesRising.  These are issues that affect every one of us.
What I’m asking from you is to include the men in your life in the conversation about work/family balance as much as possible. Tell them why you became a member of MomsRising.org, why they should become a member of FamiliesRising.org (at http://www.momsrising.org/signup) and share this link: http://www.momsrising.org/familiesrising
Only together, moms and dads united, can change really happen.
Sincerely,
Dana H. Glazer

Happy New Year, Happy Travels

This Christmas my family and I travelled to Virginia.  This trip was only the second time we have flown with our daughter.  On our first trip to VA, she was only 12 mths old and still nursing (which was very helpful).  We decided on direct flights for both trips to lessen any hassles that come with flying (besides the fact that on our first trip we brought our dog, Bailey with us!).

Our first trip went pretty smoothly for having to tug our 70+ pound dog in a kennel, lug a bulky carseat, and follow our new to walking toddler around an airport.   Because I was still nursing, I was able to nurse my daughter upon take-off and landing which meant she was pretty much asleep in my arms the entire flight!  Thus the big, bulky carseat was untouched despite all the effort to place it in the seat:(

So when planning for this past trip, we thought what can we do different because for one, we did not use the carseat at all  the last time and two, our daughter was now 2.  Note:  we did not bring the dog this time.  Not much we could do about our daughter being 2 but we did find a solution to the carseat…CARES!

Using the CARES system was a godsend!  We checked the carseat in as luggage and only had the small pouch that the CARES harness came in and it fit nicely in my carry-on bag.  It was super easy to “attach” to the airplane seat.  We had no complaints about it affecting the tray for the person behind us.  We had no complaints or questions from the flight staff (we used United).  It really gave my daughter extra “room” to move around, which she did.  I totally recommend getting a CARES system if you fly alot.  They can be pretty spendy but well worth it!

We definitely weren’t without other problems…like how to keep a two year old occupied!  Our flight was only 4-5 hours but still tough especially when your laptop isn’t fully charged and your toddler has to watch Jungle Book for the 15th time that day!!!

I would love to hear your flight stories and suggestions…so please feel free to comment!
